In My Book, Timeless is Always Trendy
I was never a slave to popular fashion trends. I have never understood why people feel compelled to follow the masses. My current wardrobe looks much the same as it did throughout the 1990s. In fact, I still own several garments I purchased back in the day. Some items just sit in my closet, just in case I decide to wear them again. Other pieces I wear regularly because I can, they still fit, and the clothes are in good shape. I still use a cozy bathrobe my mother gave me when I was a teenager! I will probably have that thing forever. My goal is always to purchase quality goods with discounted price tags. I never pay full retail value for anything.
“While Trends Fade, Style Lasts Forever”
That is a favorite saying in the fashion industry because the hottest styles tend to stand the test of time. Trends gain popularity and crash so quickly; the rush may be over by the time you realize it ever existed! I am referring to those wardrobe staples that many of us frugal folks wear to death.
10 Timeless Fashion Trends
If you have any of the following items in your closet, you will always have something suitable to wear. Here are ten timeless classics that are always in style:
- Leather Jacket
Leather was cool when Fonzie wore it, and it still looks great now! No longer reserved for rebellious types, and Harley-Davidson riders, a leather jacket always provides an edgy, high-fashion look. The material is also durable, warm, comfortable to wear, and weather-resistant. Genuine leather outerwear will only get more aesthetically pleasing as it ages.
- Little Black Dress
This is one of the longest lasting fashion trends ever – the little black dress will go on to infinity. Coco Chanel first introduced her iconic design in the 1920s and since then, it has been an essential part of nearly every woman’s wardrobe. The little black dress is so versatile, it can be worn casually during the day, or accessorized for evening wear.
- Statement Jewelry
One good piece of statement jewelry is all you need to transform your look. Depending on your personality, you may choose vintage earrings, a chunky bracelet or a large eye-catching necklace. The key is to not overdo it, a single piece is plenty.
- Well-Fitted Classic Jeans
There’s not much to say about a trusted pair of classic blue jeans, except, you just must have them. Marilyn Monroe and James Dean wore jeans (and leather!). Although the styles have changed, they have also remained the same and basic form fitting jeans are still the best in my book. Gisele Bundchen and J Lo wear them well! Interestingly, Italian sailors were the first to wear denim trousers.
- Oversized Sunglasses
Besides the extra coverage and UV protection, a big pair of sunglasses adds drama to your ensemble. Oversized sunglasses are always sophisticated and trendy. Just check out fashion magazines and celebrity bloggers.
- A Blazer
The tailored blazer is inspired by menswear, but works well for women too. It can dress up a pair of jeans or a skirt and blouse. You can wear it to the office or out for cocktails. It may even work over that little black dress.
- A Basic White T-Shirt
Picture this: a classic white T, a chunky necklace, blazer and oversized sunglasses. How hot are you? Now, what if the T-shirt was red, orange, purple or blue? You can get a quality inexpensive basic top anywhere, it is good to have several options on hand.
- A Trench Coat
Another iconic piece, a tailored trench coat is a practical purchase that always looks stylish. There are many styles and colors available, but if you prefer the timeless classic look, go for neutral tan or camel coat.
- Black Pumps
Another tried and tried fashion staple, black pumps can be worn with daywear, nightwear, jeans, a little black dress, formal attire and everything in between. Major fashion trends appear and disappear, but one thing for sure – they all look great with a good pair of black pumps.
- White Blouse
A plain white, button-down blouse will go with anything. A simple blouse is easy to dress up or dress down. You can wear it with a pair of shorts, under a blazer, with jeans or a suit. You can come up with countless combinations.
Each of these iconic and long-standing fashion trends is one that I own and will continue to stand the test of time. Continue to apply them, because there truly is no way you can go wrong.
