Coolsculpting for Stubborn Fat Bulges
I have heard too many women complain about their stomach rolls, bat wings, and bumpy outer thighs. They are unhappy about their bodies but sit around chugging beers, eating chocolate or snacking on chips in front of the boob tube. Some make excuses, others just prefer to live without limits. So many people lack the motivation to take charge of their lives. There are countless reasons why people aren’t ready, willing or able, but bitching and moaning don’t bring change. When someone who is proactive about their health continues to struggle, I always want to help, if asked.
Resistant Fat Deposits
Some women wrestle with their weight, regardless if they are active and try to eat well. Those stubborn bulges rob you of your sleek figure and fail to show off all that hard work at the gym. For those who want to smooth out their shape but don’t want to undergo invasive surgery, Coolsculpting may be the solution. But keep in mind, it is not a quick fix for those who are not willing to continue the good fight.
The Coolsculpting Process
Currently, Coolsculpting is the number one non-surgical fat reduction treatment. This body slimming remedy is offered at Avalon Medical Spa in New Bedford, MA, and Bristol, RI. Over six million treatments have been performed worldwide. Avalon has performed over 1,000 of them. It’s the only FDA approved device for freezing fat cells. On average 22–25% of cells die in one session on the area that was treated.
How it Works
The process is called cryolypolisis, which means killing fat by freezing it. Fat cells are very sensitive to cold. Coolsculpting freezes the fat to a temperature of -11 degrees C. Only the targeted cells are affected. It does not damage the skin, organs or surrounding tissue.
At Avalon Medical Spa, 360-degree pictures are taken pre-treatment, the targeted areas are marked, and the skin is prepped to protect it from the cold.
A protective gel pad is applied to the skin and the suction is activated (like a vacuum) to suck the fat into the applicator. Next, the patient is made comfortable on the bed and the cold is turned on. There may be slight stinging for the first few minutes and then the area goes numb. People fall asleep, read or watch Netflix. When the cycle is over the applicator is removed and the area gets a massage for two minutes. This step helps to enhance the results because the frozen fat cells will encounter cells that did not freeze and kill them. For those wishing to re-treat the area, a second treatment can be done one month after the first.
Coolsculpting is tailored to suit the needs of each patient. In one treatment area, 25 percent of fat cells die in a single session. Over time, your body eliminates those dead cells naturally and they are never to return. After late adolescence we don’t produce new fat cells, so once they are destroyed, they are gone for good. The cells get bigger when you gain weight and smaller when you lose, but the number of cells remains unchanged. Therefore, when you have fewer fat cells, you get a slimmer body. It takes about three months post-treatment for your body to eliminate those dead cells completely, for some individuals it may take up to four months. Some people start to see results in as early as 3 or 4 weeks. Most notice a difference in 6–8 weeks.
What to Expect Post Treatment
After the Coolsculpting procedure, there is no downtime and patients can return to their normal activities on the same day. There will be some initial swelling the first few days and minor soreness but nothing that will interfere your daily to-dos. No restrictions are needed for good recovery! In fact, exercising and moving around usually helps people feel better quickly. But, do prepare to feel numb in the treatment area for about six weeks.
Patients come back for follow up pictures in 6-8 weeks and again at the end of 16 weeks. Some people do the fat reduction procedure once, many others do it twice for further reduction in size.
Coolsculpting is intended to be used a weight loss aid, not a replacement for a balanced diet and exercise. Many patients are motivated to make healthier lifestyle choices after seeing the natural-looking results. Clothes fit better, you will look better and feel better about yourself.
