Growing up my parents worked a lot. I didn’t get to spend as much time with them as I would have liked because they were very busy trying to keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellies. Sorry for the dark start, but it’s true. Many families don’t get to spend a lot of quality time together. Parents work all day and then are exhausted when they get home. We all want to do fun things with our families,  but not all of us have a lot of time. Today I am going to be telling you about 5 fun, and good DIY’s that you can do with your kids, to make today a special one.

Egg Carton Boats

This is a really fun craft idea for kids who love the water. My kids are obsessed with water activities, o I am willing to bet that there are lots of other kids who will love this one too. Start with an old egg carton and cut it in half. This will be the base of your boat. You can color it and decorate it however you’d like. Next, take a piece of paper, any kind will do, and fold it into a triangle to make your sail. The last step is to take a Popsicle stick, or a plastic straw to act as a mast. Poke a hole in the middle of your egg carton and attach your mast to your boat. Add some finishing touches and voila! You have beautiful egg carton boats to sail in the tub, or at the lake.

Jellyfish Decorations

This one is very simple yet very cute. Start with a paper or Styrofoam bowl, to be the head of your jellyfish. Remember, the bowl will be upside down when it’s finished, so decorate the bottom and outside edges of the bowl. You can decorate it with paint, markers, or even squares of tissue paper. When you are finished, poke a hole in the center of the bottom of the bowl and run a string through, and tie a knot at the end of the string inside of the bowl. Next, take some steamers, or colorful string, anything that you want to use as the legs of your jellyfish, to the knotted end of the string. Lastly, add some googly eyes, or any other extras and display your kid’s masterpieces for everyone to see.

DIY Paints

My kids love to paint and we do this one at home all the time. All you need is some food coloring, and any lotion. If you don’t have lotion, conditioner or pretty much anything that is around the same consistency will work. Its super easy. All you have to do is put a little lotion in a bowl, and add however many drops of food coloring you need to reach your desired color. Mix well and you’re done. They are safe to be used as finger paints, or you can use brushes. Whichever you prefer.

Snow Activity Table

This one is more of a hack than a DIY activity, but it is too good not to mention. I have done this one myself as well. I thought of it one winter day when my daughter wanted to go outside to play in the snow, and I wasn’t feeling it. That sand and water activity table that you packed away at the end of the summer will come in handy here. Just grab a bucket or a bowl and go scoop some snow from your porch and fill the table. Your kids can enjoy the snow while you sip your cocoa in your big fluffy robe. If you don’t have a water table, you can use a tote or even a large bowl. Add some water-proof toys and enjoy the warmth and your couch.

DIY Stamps

What you will need for this DIY is some foam letters, and wooden blocks, or really anything that you want to use as the base of the stamp. Simply glue the letters to the blocks and you’re done. You can use this along with the DIY paint, or even color the letters with markers. This is very useful in school projects or just for fun.

These good DIY’s are sure to make happy memories. My kids love arts and crafts and doing things together. These are fun for the whole family and will definitely make your day special. It’s also a great way to recycle things that normally would just get thrown away. Have fun and happy DIY’ing.
