Planning a wedding can be a stressful business, especially if you’re doing all the legwork yourself. Having worked in the automotive industry for a number of years, as well as dabbling in the wedding scene, I thought it might be helpful to write a guide to choosing your wedding transport and the kind of things you need to consider.
Classic or modern
Classic wedding cars are the obvious choice for most couples but there are some fabulous modern cars out there that can give you a decent bang for your buck.
Cost is often a determining factor here. Classic cars, because of the upkeep and maintenance costs, can be rather pricey but if you’re looking for a modern supercar, you’re probably going to be paying a pretty penny too.
Where to hire from
There are wedding car hire sites such as BookAclassic.com, where you’ll find all sorts of cars from a wide range of professional and private owners. This is a great site to browse if you’re not sure what kind of car you want and just want to see what kind of thing is available.
With or without chauffeur
Most wedding vehicles will come with a chauffeur but you also have the option to drive yourself. Perhaps you’ve always fancied getting behind the wheel of that classic Mustang, or maybe you just want to make the most of pictures with you in the drivers’ seat.
Just like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the Royal Wedding, who drove off with the newly named Duke of Sussex behind the wheel of a classic Jaguar E-Type.
Wedding cars traditionally come decorated and it’s up to you how the car looks. Choose flowers and ribbon to adorn your car that match your wedding theme and colour scheme. Flowers on the dashboard and rear shelf of a car can add a pop of colour that ties your transport to the venue.
Number of passengers
It’s absolutely possible to rent a vehicle that can transport your entire wedding party. London buses, Volkswagen Camper Vans and vintage trucks are all suitable for multiple passengers. This is a great way to get the party started on the way to your reception.
When you choose your wedding car, consider how the photographs will look. It’s good to speak to your photographer too as they’ll be able to advise you on the best ways to use your wedding transport as a prop. You might want posed shots in front of the car or a few candid ones as you pull up to the wedding venue.
If you have a convertible car, a shot from the back of the vehicle with the happy couple kissing is, a photo album staple. This is easy enough to set up, you’ll just have to ask your chauffeur to step out for a few minutes.
Consider the time it takes to get from A to B but give yourself time to savour the car. Don’t just choose the quickest route, especially as you leave the venue as a married couple. Have a few romantic moments to yourself before the chaos and excitement of the wedding reception.
Choosing a wedding car is an important part of the wedding planning process and, like all the best venues and photographers, cars can get booked up quickly in peak wedding season.
